ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the complexity of assessing the arts within dance, drama, art and music pathways on the BA (Hons) Creative Expressive Therapies programme at the University of Derby. The core underpinning of the programme connects to the arts, health and wellbeing as outlined in a government report ‘Creative Health: The Arts for Health and Wellbeing’. Using the arts within teaching and learning in higher education will always be challenging to both teacher and student. Deciding on the grade a student would receive was both chaotic and subjective, with no real checks or balances. Students are expected to begin to critically reflect and begin to ‘transform’ their own individual understanding at a personal level. Assessing can be seen to be challenging, especially when assessing art, coupled with reflective focused academic writing, and students’ emotional responses to feedback.
