ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on evidence from research on character education and moral development education to point to sources of reference in drawing up a programme. Other evidence of what is included under the umbrella of values education is cited from policy sources, such as the Department for Education. Teachers are also concerned with pupils’ behaviour and must intervene if needed to guide the way pupils behave. This guidance is underpinned with value judgements about maintaining positive relationships with pupils, being fair, respectful and supportive. The terms ‘values education’ and ‘moral education’ are often used interchangeably, but ‘morality’ involves wider notions of ‘goodness’ and particular views on the nature of right and wrong, than the term ‘values’. Any adult in a relationship with a child is in some sense teaching about values, and such teaching takes place in various situations, such as in one-to-one conversations, classroom teaching, and parent or carer interactions.
