ABSTRACT

The UK 2014 Children and Families Act and the 2014 special educational needs and disability code of practice form the framework in England for the education of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The publication Index for Inclusion, which was sent with government support to every school in England, describes inclusion in these terms: Inclusion in education involves the processes of increasing the participation of students in, and reducing their exclusion from, the cultures, curricula and communities of local schools. Pupils may raise concerns about their own progress. As issues brought to teachers can be the tip of the iceberg, try to reflect back on what you have been told to clarify the extent of the concerns before moving to possible solutions. ‘This area covers pupils with speech and language delay, impairments or disorders, specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia and dyspraxia, hearing impairment and those who demonstrate features within the autistic spectrum’.
