ABSTRACT

This chapter examines corruption aspects in Brazil after the Car Wash investigation was launched in 2014. It analyses the main findings and outcomes of this criminal investigation. Corruption means different things for different people. The phenomenon of corruption is complex and has multiple causes. In today's world, grand corruption or political corruption is one of the greatest unsolved legal challenges. Corruption is a challenge for strengthening Latin American democracies and their economic development. The Car Wash investigation showed the involvement of presidents in Brazil and in other Latin American countries. The "Car Wash" investigation confirmed that accused companies organized themselves to eliminate those companies that were not part of the "cartel club". The chapter focuses on the dynamics of corruption as perceived in Brazil as result of the recent spiral of scandals related but not limited to the state-controlled oil and gas company Petrobras based on legal, socio-economic and culture theories.
