ABSTRACT

This chapter considers several high-profile grand corruption scandals that occurred in the oil sector in Nigeria between 2007 and 2017. The chapter structured as follows: it will commence with a brief analysis of the problems with grand corruption more generally, and in Nigeria in particular. Then it will examine several grand corruption scandals in the oil sector over the last decade, highlighting the kind of corruption, the actor(s) involved and the consequences that followed the particular scandal. The chapter analyses grand corruption scandals in the oil sector occurring between 2007 and 2017, filtering these scandals by the amount of money involved and the complexity of the corruption scheme. It discuses in relation to the kerosene subsidy scam that Nigeria maintains a subsidy regime on petroleum products, including on what is referred to as "premium motor spirit". The chapter concludes with a look at the approach to anti-corruption under the Buhari administration and the successes recorded by his regime.
