ABSTRACT

I examine several aspects of the rise of China in the past four decades. I illustrate the rise of China in two dimensions: economic development and political power. I start by an overview of the economic performance of China since the economic reform and opening-up. Next, I review the contemporary history and show achievements of China’s fast development in trade, foreign direct investment (FDI) and finance, relative to the world. In the final part of this section, I introduce the rising political power and global influence of China in regional and worldwide affairs and issues. I argue that both economic growth and political influence together present a complete picture of the rise of China.
