ABSTRACT

This essay draws attention to two potential alternatives to established Christianity in the Western world after the decline: immigrant Christian communities and the emergent/ emerging church movement. Peterson argues that conservative evangelicalism (including Pentecostalism) and smaller forms of established Christianity will continue to play a role in the future of Christianity in the West. He also analyzes the contemporary trends within Mormonism. He then offers some practical suggestions for ecclesial reform – emphasizing the themes of mission, apologetics, youth ministry and the priesthood of all believers – while pointing to the continuing significance of established Christianity after the decline.
