ABSTRACT
This essay introduces the contemporary discussion of “religion” and “secularization” before turning to an analysis of the decline of established Christianity in historical and sociological perspectives. Attention is drawn to various national contexts in which the decline is advancing in parallel fashion. Ten causes of the decline are then introduced, ranging from social developments to theological issues. Finally, the place of religion in a secular society is also analyzed.
