ABSTRACT
This essay addresses the contemporary debates regarding the nature of secularization and religion from a sociological perspective. It provides a view of secularization from three different levels: individual, institutional and societal. Hamberg argues that a form of spirituality continues to exist even with the decline of the established faith. She analyzes eclectic “unchurched spirituality” and provides a response to the decline – one that emphasizes the gospel message.
