ABSTRACT

This essay responds to the decline from an evangelical perspective – a tradition in which many of its adherents have never supported establishment in the first place. Larsen reminds us that the decline of established Christianity does not mean that the faith itself has been discredited. He argues that established Christianity is in decline today because people stopped belonging, not because they stopped believing. He holds that many young people have not had the opportunity for spiritual formation. Evangelicalism is ready to work in this new environment. As Larsen shows, it has always protested against nominal participation and sought to promote vibrant discipleship and engagement.
