ABSTRACT

The surviving archival sources and buildings which were erected by the Order allow us to take an interdisciplinary approach to the history of the Hospital. Using this interdisciplinary evidence, this chapter outlines a comprehensive picture of the Hospitaller presence in the Italian port of Genoa, focusing on the impressive complex of the commandery of San Giovanni di Pre. The picture of the Hospitaller community which emerges from documentary and archaeological sources portrays a religious community very well integrated in the city. The Hospitallers lived in a block built perpendicular to the point of junction between the churches and the hospital. Since the local tradition states that the Hospitaller commandery was built on top of the pre-existing Church of the Holy Sepulchre, it would be interesting to ascertain whether the two churches were at least located in the same area. A narrative source and archaeological evidence serve to answer this question.
