ABSTRACT

English in academic settings is a credit-bearing English for academic purposes (EAP) elective course for graduate students in education and language-related subjects. English in academic settings is a narrow-focused, specific EAP course which emerged from a research project into how best to improve the academic skills of postgraduate students of education at an Australian university. English in academic settings is a regular elective course available to postgraduate non-English-speaking background students. The course design was informed by several different theoretical perspectives; however, the main theorising was that of academic literacies and students as researcher. In the academic-literacies perspective, academic writing is seen as being informed by the academic discourse community in which it is located. Students submit journal entries on a regular basis. The lecturer or tutor provides feedback on issues identified in journals. Students are required to submit an assignment they are working on for one of their other units.
