ABSTRACT

For youth, early exposure, even a passing exposure, to a STEM topic can lead to a youth’s interest in pursuing STEM as a career (Modi, Schoenberg, & Salmond, 2012). This chapter describes a process for creating STEM programming for libraries in underserved communities. It lays out a process for including librarians as design partners to create programs that are easy to implement as well as modifiable for specific library instances. The data presented comes from a three-year study working with librarians in underserved areas of Southern California to create designed experiences for youth. This chapter offers six design considerations when designing STEM programs for libraries.
