ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the changing dynamics of gender politics in Turkey from the early republican era to the contemporary period and traces the history of the women’s movement. After setting the historical context by discussing the emergence of a troublesome relationship between the state and women’s activism, it analyses the radical turn marked by the emergence of second-wave feminism with the 1980s and then turns its attention to the politics of gender under the present government. The chapter also looks at the development of scholarship on women and gender and explores its connections with the political agenda of the various branches of women’s activism.
