ABSTRACT

Community crime prevention programs or strategies target changes in community infrastructure, culture, or the physical environment in order to reduce crime. The diversity of approaches includes neighborhood watch, community policing, urban or physical design, and comprehensive or multidisciplinary efforts. These strategies may seek to engage residents, community and faith-based organizations, and local government agencies in addressing the factors that contribute to the community's crime, delinquency, and disorder. Reducing gun violence is a persistent public policy concern for communities, policymakers, and leaders. To reduce gun violence, several strategies have been deployed including public health approaches; gun buy-back programs; gun laws; and law enforcement strategies. The practice is rated promising for reducing violent gun offenses. A crime prevention strategy that aims to improve the lighting on streets to reduce crime through modifying and improving environmental measures. The practice is rated promising for reducing crime and property offenses, but rated no effects for violent offenses.
