ABSTRACT

Crime and fear of crime remain major problems, and statistics do not tell the whole story. When people become crime victims, the fear of crime can be debilitating—especially if the work-site is located in a high crime environment. Most employees feel safe at their workplace, but getting to and from work can be dangerous. One study showed that the prime crime hours are those during which most employees are away from the work-site and therefore more vulnerable. Businesses located in core city areas with a majority of female employees who use mass transit face much different crime concerns than those with a workforce located in a suburban area. They must analyze the nature breadth and impact of crime in the community on their business, but their responses will certainly differ. At this point, law enforcement can provide suggestions for action, utilizing crime analysis and crime prevention techniques.
