ABSTRACT

Architects are experts in building design and construction but often do not consider the security needs of the population the building will ultimately serve. Owners, architects, and engineers must work together to strike a balance between building design objectives. Different groups have different needs that must be considered during the planning stages, so that the building does not have to be retrofitted with physical security measures not previously considered. As with crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED), some of the leadership in energy and environmental design concepts complement security concerns, whereas others conflict with physical security principles. By integrating multiple security systems in a layered effect—including CPTED and environmental security, critical infrastructure protection, detection systems, communications, and security surveillance systems—assessment contributes to the protection of assets as well as the control and reduction of losses and improves the quality of life within the complex.
