ABSTRACT

The concept of loss adds to the magnitude of crime and criminal behavior. It adds to the reality that conventional reactive approaches to crime and loss are failing. Crime prevention through environmental design concepts integrate productivity and profit with security and loss prevention. The profit to a neighborhood is quality of life. A happy neighborhood does not tolerate, or experience, crime and loss problems. A well-run business has fewer losses. A good school has higher achievement levels and a lower incidence of disruptive behavior and criminal incidents. A downtown or shopping center that is successful in attracting customers makes greater profits and has fewer losses. Attention to crime and loss prevention will produce payoffs. Crime and loss prevention are inherent to human functions and activities, not just something that police or security officers do.
