ABSTRACT

Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is a crime prevention approach based on a theory that the built environment influences the behavior of people. The proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the incidence and fear of crime, thereby improving the quality of life. CPTED involves the design of the physical space relative to the needs of the users, the normal use of the space, and the predictable behavior of the users of the space. Block Watch is all about neighbors helping neighbors. Block Watch teams can develop a sense of community pride and connection with their neighbors. Security practitioners and law enforcement professionals can receive recognizable Block Watch street signs and door and window decals to identify their block as one that reports suspicious activity to police.
