ABSTRACT

It is possible to use the built, urban environment to improve quality of life and reduce opportunities for crime. 1 There are physical design features that encourage legitimate users, while at the same time discourage criminal behavior. Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) strategies use designs with a positive visual impact that offer protection, without a “fortress” appearance. When CPTED concepts are integrated into the construction process, they are cost effective and can work well with the overall design of the building.
