ABSTRACT

The value of the research is to have identified those factors in the urban environment that have an incidence on crime and fear of crime and to have grouped them in simply observable or measurable indicators. Indicators are physical, temporal, and social factors that contribute to make an environment potentially safe—or unsafe—in terms of real risk and in terms of perception. They are a useful technical tool that allows technicians and decision-makers to introduce concepts of safety in the planning, design, and rehabilitation of neighborhoods. The system of indicators and maps is an important support for urban projects that are implemented by local authorities. It can be applied to correct existing situations or to prevent errors in new developments. The indicators mapping has the advantage to be highly transferable to other countries in Europe and the tools can be easily understood by architects and planners—maps are an international graphic language.
