ABSTRACT

Music has always had effects on human emotion. Music can make anyone feel anything. Songs with violent lyrics increase aggression-related thoughts and emotions, and this effect is directly related to the violence in the lyrics. Given the amount of time people spend listening to music, it is not surprising that a significant amount of research has been done to determine whether or not music can provoke violent behavior. In 2015, Tipper Gore stated, "All of the artists and record companies who still use the advisory label should be applauded for helping parents and kids have these conversations about lyrics around their own values". Everyone agrees that more research is needed, but studies have confirmed that repeated exposure to violent lyrics may contribute to the development of an aggressive personality and lead to the creation of a more hostile social environment.
