ABSTRACT

The crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) strategies may be viewed in a context of "situational crime prevention" and with consideration of the criminal "rational choice." An important part of situational crime prevention focuses on decreasing the benefits crime offers. Loss control, loss prevention, and crime prevention are primarily about increasing the efforts or hardening the target. Using target-hardening knowledge such as locks, alarms and lights in conjunction with CPTED and situational crime prevention will create a comprehensive security survey. An assessment is the process of evaluating a site for security vulnerabilities, and making recommendations to address said vulnerabilities. The goal is to remove or reduce the potential vulnerability. Completing a written report is an essential part of the security assessment because it protects the practitioner, it provides a historic document for the customer and it emphasizes issues and solutions.
