ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the first, second and the third generation of the crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED). CPTED has grown beyond what the founders ever could have imagined. First-generation CPTED is 50 years of strategies and concepts whose main purpose is to reduce crime or discourage crime or design out crime. Second-generation CPTED focuses on the concepts and strategies that will aid in the possibility of removing the reasons that crimes occur as well as the living environment and the structure of the family. Third-generation CPTED focuses on designing a green environment based on both security and physical measures to ensure that urban space is safe. It also looks at security as a global issue with geo-political and social-cultural divisions. Third-generation CPTED envisions a green sustainable approach to enhance the living standards of urbanites and improve the image of the city as user friendly, safe, and secure.
