ABSTRACT

A wider, and often critical, climate of opinion prompts a defence of the place of Environmental Studies as an academic course in Colleges of Education. The survey shows that rapid progress has been made since Martin’s survey of 1968, almost double the number of Colleges offering Main courses. Nineteen syllabuses were examined, culled from Handbooks of Institutes of Education or received directly from Colleges, to whom thanks are due. A classification of aims, however, has been attempted. It should be emphasized that the aims should be seen in the context of Main courses in Environmental Studies in Colleges, and not of Environmental Studies courses in general, though separating the two is often difficult and sometimes unnecessary. A handful of Colleges expressed the hope of instilling “a personal reaction” or of stimulating “a wide variety of aesthetic experience” in relation to the environment.
