ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the predecessor of IUP – the Inter-University Fellowship Program for Field Training in Chinese, administered by Harold Shadick of Cornell University. The Inter-University Fellowship Program was intended to be available to all advanced graduate students in Chinese studies in the US On that premise. Among the many US-sponsored Chinese language training programs in China and Taiwan available to the current generation of students, IUP is widely recognized in academia as the oldest pre-eminent program where specialists in Chinese studies for over half a century received their Chinese language training. American academia began to recognize Chinese studies as a worthy field for inclusion in university curriculums only in the 1930s, quite a bit later than in Europe. After 1949, interest in Chinese studies continued to grow in the US, albeit at a slow pace, and by the mid-1950s, advanced graduate students in Chinese studies were coming down the pipeline.
