ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses Inter-University Program (IUP) for Chinese Language Studies in Taipei administered by Stanford University. At the time of its founding in 1963, IUP was a creation of the then budding centers of Chinese studies in the US, and it was to be a collaborative institution – situated in a Chinese language and cultural environment. Scholars of Chinese studies aspiring to a career in academia were funneled into IUP, which set a high bar for the center's teachers, and contributed greatly to the intellectual ambiance of the center. One aspect of the program that has remained constant is the range of the IUP curriculum, which is from the post-basic level up through the advanced level. The curriculum adopted by IUP in 1963 was very much modeled on the Cornell Program. The production of teaching materials is an area in which IUP invested a considerable amount of human resources during the Taipei era.
