ABSTRACT

In contrast to the detailed record of the Roman conquest of Gaul given by Julius Caesar himself in his Comments on the Gallic War, archaeological evidence connected to the events described there is still sparse. Only recently has systematic landscape-archaeological research in the vicinity of Hermeskeil, situated about 35 km southeast of Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate, and brought to light the remains of a Late Republican Roman military camp. Estimations therefore would have to rely solely on comparisons with other Caesarian sites, but unfortunately not a single Late Republican camp in Gaul of similar function is securely dated. Systematical investigation of the Hermeskeil military camp commenced with a campaign of field walking in 2010. A Roman vicus is not yet known from the area around Hermeskeil, but there are indications of a sizeable Roman settlement which seems to be a serious contender and will thus be investigated further in the near future.
