ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I provide a survey of the various structural levels that comprise an interlanguage phonology: features, segments, syllables and prosody. Looking at the initial state of the grammar, I will probe elements of transfer. Looking at the end state of the grammar, I will consider aspects of ultimate attainment. I will also see how universal properties of grammar influence the structures of an interlanguage insofar as intermediate states may be neither L1 nor L2 properties but nonetheless are grammars sanctioned by universal grammar. Finally, I will demonstrate how new structures, not found in the L1, can be acquired via a mechanism of redeploying L1 structures to construct new representations.
