ABSTRACT

Any nationwide reconstruction project will probably not be enough to promote reconciliation, since the eventual demobilization of combatants is only partially connected to concrete and negotiable issues. Multiple factors impede transition from war to peace: a domineering and violent environment, pervasive in culture, society, economy, politics, religion, etc., in addition to an exacerbated middle-eastern sense of masculinity and honour. Another argument is that the plague of sectarianism has built organic barriers between people, to the point that minorities feel organically threatened by the Sunni (sometimes reactionary) majority.
