ABSTRACT

The Face of AIDS film archive was handed over to Karolinska Institutet University Library in 2013 and since that time the library has been working on building an accessible and searchable online film archive. Our goal has been to make the archive available to researchers and teachers, and to a limited extent to the general public. In our contribution, we outline the challenges that we have faced during the work. We focus on the legal and ethical problems of making about 700 hours of film available online, given that the films deal with a disease surrounded with stigma and are recorded in different contexts and in many cases long before the World Wide Web existed. We also describe the process of indexing the film material in order to make the archive searchable.
