ABSTRACT

This chapter documents the trialling of a system of management review and improvement designed for senior management teams (SMTs). Central to the development of the Management Review and Improvement system was the question of how to help SMTs to adopt working practices appropriate to the development of the kind of characteristics which emerge from the 'effectiveness' and 'quality' literature. Head teachers also felt that the use of the Standards had generated clear goals and had maintained sharply focused discussion. Head teachers felt that the adoption of the Standards as a basis for review and improvement had the potential to improve process management generally. Head teachers were optimistic that a good knowledge base would lead senior managers to develop and display other skills necessary for dynamic team activity. The processes involved in the workshops were designed to promote the development of the skills of reviewing and reflecting upon current management practice, identifying areas for development and agreeing appropriate targets and strategies.
