ABSTRACT

The emergence of ‘trans’ as a social and political movement and identity has created the conditions for ‘trans’ approaches to DIY music and event organisation, organised more around the gender(ed) identities and politics of those involved than musical genre.

This chapter examines the parallels between the attitude taken towards gender(ed) identity and the organisation of events in the United Kingdom’s trans music scene during a key period of cultural emergence from 2010–2013. The trans identities of scene participants and the events they organised, attended and played at both relied on forms of identity de/construction through strategies of ‘genre evasion’ and ‘cut-and-paste’. This de/constructive process crossed boundaries and opened possibilities, enabling new modes of organisation alongside new ways of understanding culture and identity.
