ABSTRACT

In several of his writings (e.g. Demonax, Alexander, De morte Peregrini, Fugitivi, Pro lapsu inter salutandum, Apologia), Lucian comments on the doings and attitudes of Roman officials he himself or other people had to deal with under various circumstances. This paper gives a survey of these passages and tries to answer the question whether we can detect a consistent way of looking (on Lucian’s part) at these Romans, and so learn something new about the question of Lucian’s attitude towards the Roman Empire as such.
