ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on some of the themes concerning the spatial senses, without necessarily trying to be impartial or comprehensive. It shows that audition provides spatial information by means of various mechanisms, such as interaural differences, but whether the pieces of information show up at the conscious level is less clear. The book is based on the third iCog conference Sense and Space held in London on the 18th and 19th of February 2016, and a similar workshop held at UC Berkeley on the 18th and 19th of September 2017. Sensing or perceiving is a basic capacity of living creatures for survival. The book provides not only for experts in the relevant fields but also for graduate students as well as advanced undergraduate students.
