ABSTRACT
The Great Recession of 2008 has greatly destabilized the British party system. The three general elections that have been held in Britain since 2010 have uncovered an unstable, unpredictable and fragmented party system where it is increasingly difficult for the two main parties to secure majorities in the House of Commons. These elections have also revealed a highly volatile electorate divided along age, educational, geographical and class lines. These new tendencies suggest that the British party system is undergoing a profound change.
