ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the Malaysia's role in geopolitical conflicts over refugee and asylum seekers in Southeast Asia. It discusses a comprehensive critique of the model of parental engagement being constructed through the discourse of the Blueprint. Through the Blueprint, the Malaysian education system aims to produce highly self-motivated adults, emphasizing the importance of English as a global language for career advancement and exemplifying self-paced, self-directed learning. A critical analysis and discussion of the interview texts follows the analysis of the Blueprint policy document. The chapter discloses all the students had professional aspirations, and in their narratives they expressed a strong commitment towards their education. It discusses the students all had professional ambitions, but when asked about their future career plans, it was evident that many lacked the educational knowledge that would be necessary for them to realize their hopes.
