ABSTRACT

If you ask your students which of the four skills they feel most confident about, chances are they will say “reading.” By the time we meet our students at university, their eyes have spent a great deal of time looking at English text. They have bored into complex sentences, laboriously engineering them from English to Japanese. They may have even memorized sample sentences and old sayings. But as they read texts in our classes, some gaps or ‘blind spots’ in their reading skills soon become apparent.
