ABSTRACT

The 'Young People's Attitudes to Religious Diversity' project continued a tradition of Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit (WRERU) studies concerned with religious diversity in the United Kingdom (UK). WRERU's participation in the European Commission Framework 6 Religion, Education, Dialogue, Conflict project produced a body of research on young people in eight European nations, including WRERU's studies in England. An opportunity to design a large-scale mixed-methods research project came through the Religion and Society Programme. The project proposal was drafted by Jackson and Francis, in consultation with other WRERU colleagues who became members of the project team. WRERU's use of combined qualitative and quantitative methods was extended through the appointment of new staff, enabling the design of a project for the UK government on 'materials used to teach about world religions in schools in England'. The Diversity project enabled the strengthened WRERU team to undertake a major study of young people's attitudes across the UK, using an integrated mixed-methods approach.
