ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the human factor in machine translation from a personal and encyclopedic perspective, reflecting the importance of this factor through contributions to machine translation by specialists in the context of the three encyclopedias compiled in the field of translation and interpreting. It discusses the compilation of the three translation encyclopedias, covering virtually all the areas in the field. The idea of publishing an encyclopedia of translation, with special reference to translation between Chinese and English, had been on my mind since author started to teach the course "Translation Theory" at The Chinese University many years ago. The second translation encyclopedia that author edited was The Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Technology, which was published in January 2015. The last publication that helped author prepare for the planned encyclopedia was the book A Topical Bibliography of Computer(-aided) Translation, which was actually an exercise in the collection of bibliographical data.
