ABSTRACT

In order to make its policy accessible to the outside world, the Chinese government immediately releases the Paper in English and several other languages. In doing so, it is self-evident that the Chinese government wants to guarantee the accurate translation of the message to the global community and generate similar effects on the target readers in different languages exactly the way that the Chinese version of the White Papers has on the Chinese readers. This chapter investigates how faithful the message has been to the original text in its rhetorical effect. It contributes to the assessment of translation from a new perspective, i.e. the persuasive effect of translation. Translation quality assessment has been discussed from many perspectives. DocuScope is a text analysis platform with a suite of interactive visualization tools for corpus-based rhetorical analysis. The chapter concludes with the overall rhetorical effect of a translation as text for intercultural communication can be quantitatively measured and evaluated.
