ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the performance of term extraction tools from different perspectives, including those of the researchers, software developers and end users. It aims at uncovering the discrepancy in the expectation of these different parties and thus reconciling their perception of term extraction tools, to advance further development of the tools based on such mutual understanding. The chapter is concerned with English-Chinese term extraction and term extraction tools are discussed in their generic sense without reference to any particular system, although specific software products are mentioned for illustration. It focuses on an overview of the operation flow in most existing term extraction tools for translators. The chapter introduces the various stakeholders, putting ourselves in their shoes to explore their respective views on the tools. It also discusses how standard evaluation measures applied to automatic term extraction match or mismatch the perspectives of various parties and suggests a more comprehensive evaluation with user expectations taken into account.
