ABSTRACT
Every year, the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica is commemorated. This commemoration evokes counter-rituals as there is no shared truth about what happened in Srebrenica. The rituals and counter-rituals define the ethnic groups involved – especially the Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) and Bosnian Serbs – as victims. This chapter analyses and evaluates the rituals and counter-rituals regarding the Srebrenica genocide. Second, it poses the question: what is needed in post-war Bosnia-Herzegovina to rebuild the country and restore relationships? Although the chapter tries to show a way to go beyond the ethnically and religiously profiled rituals, it is clear that the answer to this question has to be found by the people of Bosnia-Herzegovina themselves.
