ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the conceptual frameworks of child mortality. It analyses levels and trends in mortality of children under age five for Asia at the regional and country level and discusses disparities of child mortality by age, gender and socioeconomic status as well as demographic risk factors such as birth intervals. The chapter also describes the leading causes of death for children under age five in Asia and the progress that has been made in reducing under-five deaths from infectious diseases. While Asia as a whole has made substantial progress in reducing child mortality over the past decades, the chapter highlights the unfinished business to improve child survival.
