ABSTRACT

The chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries are often viewed as Sun Rise industries, providing skilled jobs as well as technology transfer and other linkages into the local innovation system. Analysis of the pharmaceutical sector has often focused on its growth dynamics. Certain indicators have qualified the characterisation of this sector as a Sun Rise industry, a term used by policy makers in the context of various industry promotion initiatives. The total number of pharmaceutical, bulk drug and other chemical industries in the industrial development areas of the Medak district of Andhra Pradesh is about 320. The chemical industry has long been dominated by US and European corporations. A dirty good is defined in value and volume terms. It can be defined as a commodity whose production involves either higher clean-up costs than the value of the final product or higher volume of effluents than the volume of the final product.
