ABSTRACT

All children are different. Many will be able to make good use of the early years provision on offer, but for others, it can be more of a challenge. This chapter introduces three young children who have attended Ronald Openshaw Nursery Education Centre (RONEC), a maintained nursery school in Stratford, East London. It gives us an idea of the importance of an accurate assessment of their very different individual needs, and how this links to celebrating each step of their learning at this critical age. Working in a local authority committed to the inclusion of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can be a privilege. Critical to such work, however, is a positive 'can do' approach, as opposed to one based on a deficit 'it is not possible' model. Parents of children with SEND are likely to have experienced some sort of discrimination, and this may take some time, patience and expertise to overcome.
