ABSTRACT

Using the new Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California, Davis as a case study, this chapter argues that museum architecture should serve as a platform, facilitating programming and sustaining long-term community outreach. It demonstrates how a democratic, transparent, and public design process can be leveraged to create appropriate and responsive design solutions, craft a welcoming sense of place, shape pedagogical and educational experiences, and turn the museum into a site for inclusion and community engagement.
