ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the transformational reworking of the museum design process to reflect a social model of disability. Using the redevelopment of ‘The Museum at the Gateway Arch’, at The Gateway Arch National Park in St Louis, Missouri, as a case study, the authors demonstrate that both the process and outputs of exhibition design benefit from an inclusive methodology. This moves further from merely providing physically accessible exhibition environments, to seeking to facilitate equality of experience for all museum visitors.
