ABSTRACT

The medium of film, with its narrative structure and spatial qualities, has an affinity to the museum experience. This chapter proposes that by analysing the language and structure of narrative in film, we can inform the physical experience of the museum or exhibition visit. Comparisons are drawn between example exhibition projects by the studio Duncan McCauley and three identified types of narrative structures in films: collage, repeat structure and reverse chronology. The analysis suggests that looking at the form of structures beyond the medium of the museum can benefit the design and development of innovative museum experiences.
