ABSTRACT

Denmark is the smallest of the Scandinavian countries, having a population of 5,111,500 in 1979. The land area of metropolitan Denmark (43,069 km2) is a little less than one-fifth of that of the United Kingdom and consists of the peninsula of Jutland plus 406 islands, 97 of which are inhabited. Two other territories are attached to the Danish Crown. The Faroes (38,680 inhabitants) have formed a self-governing region of the Kingdom since 1948, and Greenland (46,300 inhabitants) since 1979. The present chapter will concentrate on the regional management problems of metropolitan Denmark.
